Lindenwald as a Political Base

Van Buren certainly did not consider his career over when he moved back to Kinderhook after his failed 1840 election, and this was much more than a retirement home to him. Martin Van Buren ran two failed presidential campaigns from Lindenwald and continued to be active in politics for the rest of his life.

 

The Election of 1844

In 1844, Van Buren would unsuccessfully seek the Democratic nomination.

The Election of 1848

In 1848, Van Buren's retirement at Lindenwald was interrupted by one final call to run for the office of President of the United States.
