Looking to make the park your classroom for the day? A visit to Martin Van Buren National Historic Site gives your students the opportunity to learn about antebellum history and agriculture in an engaging, hands-on environment!
Our standard field trip, geared towards upper-elementary students, lasts about 90 minutes. It includes a tour of historic Lindenwald, Martin Van Buren’s home. Students will also learn about Lindenwald as an active farm and try their hand at sustainable agriculture through a soil activity. Primary topics covered on the program include:
The role of elections and the presidency in American democracy
The lives of enslaved people and the political debate over slavery
Daily life in an antebellum household
Operating a 19th century farm
Subjects at the request of the teacher or educator
Have different needs? No worries! We are flexible and happy to work with you.
You may choose to visit the park as a stand-alone field trip, or pair it with a visit to the nearby Luykas Van Allen House, administered by the Columbia County Historical Society.
