National Park Service Recognizes Women's History Month

Washington, D.C. — The Mary McLeod Bethune Council House and Carter G. Woodson Home National Historic Sites will recognize Women's History Month through the following events tailored to the National Women's History Month theme "Our History is Our Strength."

Thursday March 17, 2011: Book Signing 1:00 p.m.

Cheryl A. Smith will discuss and sign her book titled: Market Women Black Women Entrepreneurs: Past, Present, and Future. This book discussion will help to empower women to embrace business ownership as a career field. This event will take place at 1:00 pm at the Mary McLeod Bethune Council House NHS, 1318 Vermont Avenue, N.W. Washington, D.C., 20005.

Thursday March 24, 2011: Book Signing 1:00 p.m.

Carla L. Peterson will discuss and sign her book titled: Black Gotham: A Family History of African Americans in Nineteenth Century New York City. This book discussion will help to share a groundbreaking personal account of an elite African American New York family set during the nineteenth century. This event will take place at 1:00 pm at the Mary McLeod Bethune Council House NHS, 1318 Vermont Avenue, N.W. Washington, D.C., 20005.

Thursday March 31, 2011: Book Signing 1:00 p.m.

Tracye Lynn McQuirter will discuss and sign her book titled, By Any Greens Necessary: A Revolutionary Guide for Black Women Who Want to Eat Great, Get Healthy, Lose Weight, and Look Phat. This book discussion will help to share the benefits of healthy eating habits. This event will take place at 1:00 pm at the Mary McLeod Bethune Council House NHS, 1318 Vermont Avenue, N.W. Washington, D.C., 20005.

National Archives of Black Women's History – Special Collections

Film Presentation: The Crowning Experience is a film starring Muriel Smith based on the life of Mary McLeod Bethune. This 1960's musical will help share the experiences of Mrs. Bethune during a unique period in American history which is interpreted at the site daily.

These programs are part of an ongoing series of public programs offered at the Mary McLeod Bethune Council House and Carter G. Woodson Home National Historic Site's to promote public understanding of the history and special places that have been included in the national park system. The Mary McLeod Bethune Council House and Carter G. Woodson Home NHS are  two of several park sites that make up National Capital Parks-East. National Capital Parks-East offers a wide array of historic, cultural, and recreational areas that are part of Washington, D.C. and its eastern environs.
