The Mary McLeod Bethune Council House National Historic Site provides a wide variety of materials and activities that can be reinforced in the classroom. The Bethune Council House can also provide Park Rangers to conduct off-site programs at schools in the Washington, D.C. area. Contact us by phone by dialing the site at (202) 673-2402, or calling the Frederick Douglass NHS (which also staffs the Bethune Council House) at (202) 426-5961, to learn about availability. You can also send us an email at bethunenhs@nps.gov. Teacher Ranger Teacher Program
The emphasis of this program is to link National Park units and teachers from schools with underserved student populations in urban and rural school districts. Teachers spend the summer learning, and sometimes also living in the park. During the Summer of 2013, Ms. Melissa N. Green, a Fairfax County Public Schools Teacher, came to the Mary McLeod Bethune Council House National Historic Site through the Teacher Ranger Teacher program. While she was with us, she developed two of the lesson plans we now have available to the public: "The Mary McLeod Bethune Virtual Experience" and "Negro League Baseball and its Connection to Mrs. Mary McLeod Bethune." Ms. Green made a video talking about Mary McLeod Bethune and her experiences as a Teacher Ranger Teacher. Learn more about the National Park Service Teacher Ranger Teacher program. |
