The King Center

It is with great sadness that the Martin Luther King National Historical Park staff, partners, and volunteers announces the passing of Dr. Christine King Farris.

While most knew her as the sister of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Dr. King Farris was a Professor Emerita at Spelman College in Atlanta, GA. for over 40+ years. Dr. King Farris was an author of several books, a public speaker on various topics, including the King family, multicultural education, and teachings of several areas. She committed her life to the preservation of her brother and the King family’s legacy.

While Dr. King Farris was in her early 80s until her health began to fail, she insisted upon continuing to work and promote the life and legacy of her brother, Dr. King. For her unselfishness and commitment, she would later be named a life-long volunteer and honorary park ranger of the park. Her unselfish acts of service enabled school groups and the public to have more personal connections with her family’s legacy.

We will be forever grateful for Dr. Christine King Farris’ service to the park, and we will miss her dearly.

Please note, the arrangements of her final services including a public viewing on Saturday, July 15, 2023, from 10:00am until 4:00pm in the Heritage Sanctuary of the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church located at 407 Auburn Avenue, NE, Atlanta, Georgia
