Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Grove on the Potomac welcomes all visitors with disabilities.

The memorial grove has flat paths that wind around a grove of white pine and dogwood trees. From the memorial plaza, there are views of the Potomac River and the skyline of Washington, DC.

Location

LBJ Memorial Grove is in Lady Bird Johnson Park, formally known as Columbia Island, on the Potomac river. The memorial grove has no street address, but most navigation apps can provide directions.

You can reach the memorial grove from the Columbia Island Marina parking area or by using the footbridge from Boundary Channel Drive. The marina parking lot offers the shortest and flattest walk.

Parking

There is a small parking area on Boundary Channel Drive next to the Pentagon North Parking Lot.

• 2 accessible parking spaces, 1 with access aisle
• 35+ standard parking spaces

A 75 ft long ramp with slopes from 7 to 8% leads from the parking area to the footbridge. The footbridge is about 310 ft long and has weathered wooden planks. It arches over the boundary channel and has running slopes from 5 to 9%.

Columbia Island Marina has a large parking lot just south of the memorial grove.

• 4 accessible parking spaces, 2 accessible aisles, on the north end of the parking lot closest to the Memorial Grove
• 200+ standard spaces

Flat, paved walkways connect the marina parking lot to the memorial grove.

 

Restrooms and Drinking Fountains

There are men's and women's restrooms in the Columbia Island comfort station next to the Columbia Island Marina parking lot.

Drinking fountains around the memorial and by the Boundary Channel Drive parking area are not currently working.

 

The paths in the memorial grove are popular with cyclists and locals taking a stroll.

In the Memorial Grove

All paths in the memorial grove are paved asphalt or stone.

There is a flat, wide quarter-mile loop path with multiple benches on the north end of the memorial grove.

The centerpiece of the memorial grove is a memorial plaza where there is a large granite pillar, four of President Johnson's quotes carved into stone, and an informational sign.

 

Audio Description, Braille, and Hands-On Experiences

There are no braille features or tactile experiences in the memorial grove. The text from the information panels at the memorial and at the Boundary Channel Drive parking area is available in the NPS App and works with screen readers.

Service Animals

Service animals are welcome at the LBJ Memorial Grove on the Potomac. Service animals are individually trained to perform a specific task that assists a person with a disability. See the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) definition of a service animal.
