Mary Chase Perry was born in Hancock in 1867, where her childhood home still stands. She became a co-founder of the renowned Pewabic Pottery, a designated historical landmark and Michigan's only historic pottery. Although Pewabic Pottery is located in Detroit, the name Pewabic may be familiar to local residents: it adorns a local copper vein and the Quincy Hill housing location.
