Invading Invasives - Activities

Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park

What's an Invasive Species?

are plants or animals that move from an old place to a new place that they have never been. And they are bad for the other plants or animals in the new place. Invasive species can change food webs. They usually don’t have anything that eats them. They can beat out other plants or animals for food that they all need. This means the invasive species can grow out of control.

Why is controlling invasive species important?

we must control them. One invasive species in Lake Superior and the other Great Lakes is called the sea lamprey. The sea lamprey’s home is an ocean called the Atlantic Ocean. But today it is also found in the Great Lakes where it does great harm. It eats lots of fish. Not much eats the sea lamprey, though. So we must control it, so it doesn’t grow out of control.
