Information about the Keweenaw NHP Minecraft Project

Two Minecraft players with park ranger skins in front of a building
The Keweenaw NHP Minecraft Project is a historically and spatially accurate, virtual recreation of the Calumet Unit of Keweenaw National Historical Park and the surrounding area in 1917.

We are working with youth and gamers to build a to-scale recreation of the historic Calumet Village. The created maps can be played and explored within the Keweenaw NHP Minecraft Project.

We are using many historical resources for this project: the 1917 Sanborn Fire Insurance series, Calumet & Hecla Mining Company map, and historic and present-day photos. Throughout the building process, we use local photographic collections, including Michigan Technological University Archives and websites such as views of the past. This project uses such digital resources as Google Street View and Keweenaw Time Traveler to host image resources for Keweenaw NHP Minecraft builders to easily find.

To build with us, you will need to have a copy of the JAVA version of Minecraft. Our runs on version 1.16.5.

Builders will regularly engage with park rangers on our Minecraft and Discord servers.
