  • The Kaloko Road gate is locked promptly at 5:00 PM. Please ensure your vehicle is removed from the area before closing time.

Navigation Apps Warning

Many popular mapping apps, including Google Maps, do not provide correct driving directions to this specific entrance. Please follow the official park directions listed below to ensure you arrive safely.

Road Conditions and Rental Cars Warning

The final portion of this route is a rough, unpaved dirt road known as "Kaloko Road" or "Ala Nui Kaloko."

  • It features uneven surfaces, rocks, and potholes.
  • This road is not suitable for most standard rental cars.
  • Operating a standard vehicle on this road may violate your rental car agreement. High-clearance or 4WD vehicles are strongly recommended.

Driving from the Visitor Center (Hale Hoʻokipa)

If you are starting your visit at the Hale Hoʻokipa Visitor Center, use these step-by-step directions to reach the Kaloko Fishpond picnic area:

  1. Exit the parking lot and proceed straight through the traffic light, crossing over Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway.
  2. Turn left onto Kanalani Street, and continue for 0.9 miles.
  3. Turn left onto Hina Lani Street to head back down toward the highway.
  4. Turn left onto Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway (HI-19) heading south.
  5. Turn right onto "Kaloko Road" / "Ala Nui Kaloko". There is no road sign — you can identify the turn by the yield sign at the exit (across the highway from the large yellow Kona Trade Center building). Continue onto the dirt road.
  6. Follow the dirt road carefully and slowly to the end to reach the Kaloko Fishpond parking and picnic area. Watch out for oncoming traffic on the narrow path
