John Muir National Historic Site

The Visitor Center is conveniently located just off the Highway 4 exit, making it easy to find. Our modest, free parking lot usually has available spaces. If you need assistance or have questions about directions, feel free to give us a call.

Directions by Car

From San Francisco:

• Take eastbound I-80 (Bay Bridge) to eastbound Highway 4.
• Exit at Alhambra Avenue and turn left at the bottom of the ramp.
• Cross under the highway; the park is immediately on your left.

From San Jose:

• Take northbound I-680 (or southbound I-680 from Sacramento) to westbound Highway 4.
• Exit at Alhambra Avenue and turn right at the bottom of the ramp.
• The park will be on your left.

Parking for Recreational Vehicles

Due to its small size (16 spaces), the parking lot cannot accommodate RVs or large vehicles. Instead:

• Park on Walnut Avenue, across from the Visitor Center.
• Use the nearby Chase Bank parking lot to turn around, but do not park there.

Public Transportation Options

BART:

• Take BART to the Concord station.
• From there, transfer to The County Connection #16 bus, which stops directly at the park.

Amtrak:

• Amtrak serves downtown Martinez, about two miles from the park.
• Transfer to The County Connection #16 bus for direct access to the site.

Visitors arriving by air can choose either Oakland International Airport or San Francisco International Airport, both of which offer convenient access to the area.
