Walk in the footsteps of John Muir, right here in Martinez!
Join a National Park Service ranger for a free early Saturday morning nature hike on March 5, 2016, at the John Muir National Historic Site. The two-hour walk will begin at 8:30 AM with an easy saunter up Mt. Wanda to look for wildflowers and learn about plants native to the area. Over 82 species of native plants have been identified on Mt. Wanda, and hikers may spot California buttercups, purple Chinese houses and mule’s ears.
Mt. Wanda, a 326-acre open space of oak woodlands and grassland, is part of the John Muir National Historic Site (NHS). Created in 1964, John Muir NHS preserves the home and landscapes of conservationist and national park advocate John Muir (1838-1914). Mt. Wanda is named after Muir’s eldest daughter, Annie Wanda Muir.
Meet at the Park and Ride lot at the corner of Alhambra Avenue and Franklin Canyon Road in Martinez, CA (at the Alhambra Ave. exit off Highway 4). Bring water and wear good walking shoes because the trail is steep. If it rains heavily, the walk will be cancelled.
Created in 1964, John Muir NHS preserves the home, landscapes, and gravesite of conservationist and national park advocate John Muir. Muir spent his entire life exploring, studying, and writing about his experiences in the American wilderness, most notably the Sierra Nevada Mountains. His writing set the stage for a conservation movement that would spur protection of nature nationwide and ultimately throughout the world.
