In commemoration of the 185th birthday of our 20th President, James A. Garfield, and the 135th anniversary of his tragic assassination, James A. Garfield National Historic Site is coordinating the "President James A. Garfield Heritage Hike" on Saturday, November 19 from 8:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. We are offering two hikes;a 12.5 mile hike and a 2.5 mile hike. The 12.5 mile hike will start at the birthplace of President James A. Garfield located in Moreland Hills and end at his final resting place at the Garfield Monument in Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland. The 2.5 mile short hike will start at the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes in Shaker Heights and will end at the Garfield Monument. Hikers will walk through Moreland Hills, Orange Village, Pepper Pike, Beachwood, Shaker Heights, and Cleveland Heights. During the hike you can test your knowledge on our 20th President of the United States by answering questions about Garfield during the route!
Hikers will join members of the general public at the Garfield Monument for a military ceremony and wreath laying honoring the birth of James A. Garfield commencing at 2:00 p.m. The wreath laying ceremony will end around 3:30 p.m., concluding the program.
Make sure to dress for the weather and you must provide your own lunch and return transportation from Lake View Cemetery. The cost for the hike is $10 and includes a souvenir t-shirt and support during the hike. Reservations are required and space is limited! For details about the hike, call James A.
