INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL LAKESHORE: Take a break from the cold winter weather at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s Paul H. Douglas Center. Stop by the center everySaturdayafternoon at1:30 p.m.and enjoy a fun and educational video about nature, environmental issues, or other national parks.

OnDecember 21and 28, the featured videos highlight the healing power of nature and encourage kids to get outside and enjoy active, “unplugged” activities. Children who play outside regularly tend to be healthier and are less likely to be obese or suffer from attention deficit disorder. Our January 4th video features the challenges that Silent Spring author, RachaelCarson, faced warning about issues related to pesticides use. Visitthe park’s official Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/IndianaDunesNL for an updated listing of the films.

These videos are offered as part of theSaturdayopen house programs at the Douglas Center. In addition to the videos, enjoy the center’s hands-on exhibits, make a free craft or help feed the native fish and turtles in our animal room. Free refreshments add to the open house atmosphere. The new nature play area just outside the center is open for unstructured play until4:00 pm. When there is adequate snow, cross-country skis and snowshoes can be borrowed for use on the Miller Woods Trail.

The Douglas Center is located at 100 North Lake Street in the Miller section of Gary.
