Indiana Dunes National Park is again bringing the Northwest Indiana Symphony to West Beach on Friday, August 2, at 7:30 pm for a free concert with the magnificent dunes as the backdrop. Enjoy the 40-piece symphony orchestra under the direction of Conductor Kirk Muspratt for a two-hour performance. Limited seating is available; so, visitors are encouraged to bring folding chairs. Several food vendors will be serving a variety of dinner or snack items or participants can bring a picnic dinner.
First presented in 2016, this concert has grown so popular that demand exceeded the number of parking spots at West Beach last year and hundreds of people had to be turned away. This year, a ticketing system was put in place for the concert’s parking spots. All 450 free parking tickets at West Beach have been “sold out.” Additional parking at Wells Street Beach is available for $11 per car with a free shuttle bus to West Beach. The Wells Street Beach parking lot is located at 9501 Lake Shore Drive in Gary. The first shuttle will leave Wells Street at 5:30 pm and the last one will leave at 6:45, so show up early. After the concert, the shuttles will return people to their cars at the Wells Street Beach parking lot. Please carpool if possible. Walk-ins and people arriving on bicycle don’t need a parking ticket to enter West Beach.
In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be moved to the Chesterton High School Auditorium. Information concerning inclement weather will be posted at the entrance to West Beach, on the park’s website at www.nps.gov/indu, and on the park’s Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/
Concert Sponsors include Friends of Indiana Dunes, Dunes National Park Association and the Dunes Learning Center. For more information on the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra and its sponsors, visit their website at www.nisorchestra.org.
