INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL PARK: Join park staff and other visitors to celebrate the 56th Anniversary of the Indiana Dunes National Park. The celebration takes place at the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center on Saturday, November 5th at 1:00 pm with a hour-long presentation by regional historian Kenneth Schoon. Learn about the wonders of the Indiana Dunes and the fight to preserve them that was led by local citizens through the Save the Dunes Council. The presentation will be followed by a viewing of the award-winning film, “Shifting Sands” from 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm. Schoon who has written several books on the Indiana Dunes region also wrote a companion book to the film. Several of Schoon’s books are for sale at the visitor center’s bookstore.
The Indiana Dunes Visitor Center is located at 1215 North State Road 49 in Porter, about one mile north of Interstate 94. Indiana Dunes National Park is one of more than 400 units of the National Park System ranging from Yellowstone to the Statue of Liberty. Located in Northwest Indiana, the park includes 15 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and 15,000 acres of biodiverse beaches, woods, prairies, and marshes. Up to 3 million visitors come to the Indiana Dunes each year.
