Bog Gone Wild at Indiana Dunes  

Take a self-guided hike into the amazing Pinhook Bog on Saturday, October 1 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Indiana Dunes National Park. Rangers and volunteers will be stationed along the trail to help you understand this unique remnant of the last ice age that is filled with interesting plant life, like carnivorous insect-eating plants and orchids.  Allow one hour to walk the trail and tour the quaking bog. Please arrive before 2:00 pm to allow enough time to complete the tour.   The Pinhook Bog parking lot is located at 920 North Wozniak Road in Michigan City. The GPS coordinates are 41.621214, -86.850227 (Decimal Degrees).

Folk Music Concert at National Park’s Chellberg Farm

Relax on the front lawn of Chellberg Farm for an evening of music on Sunday, October 2, from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm. The Save the Tunes Council is a group of local musicians devoted to preserving and passing on folk songs in the traditional way, using a variety of traditional musical instruments including guitar, autoharp, dulcimer, banjo, harmonica, bagpipe, penny whistle, hurdy gurdy, and other obscure instruments. Please bring a blanket or folding chair for this outdoor performance on the lawn of the Chellberg Farmhouse. Be prepared to park in the auxiliary parking lot during the summer due to parking congestion.  The Chellberg Farm parking lot is located on Mineral Springs Road between U.S. Highway 20 and U.S. Highway 12 in Porter, Indiana.

West Beach Hike at the National Park 

Join a ranger for a hike on one of the park’s most treasured trails on Sunday, October 2 from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm. The Dune Succession Trail highlights the four stages of dune development within its one-mile length. This scenic, but strenuous trail includes a climb up 270 stairs for a spectacular view of Lake Michigan and Chicago. You will also learn about the legend and real life of early dune’s conservation advocate Alice Gray, also known as Diana of the Dunes.  Meet at the West Beach parking lot, which is located at 376 North County Line Road in Portage.

Tolleston Dunes Nature Hike at the National Park  

Join a ranger for a hike at the Tolleston Dunes trail on Saturday, October 8 and 22 from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm. The trail winds around 4,700-year-old sand dunes and through multiple different ecosystems including a globally rare black oak savanna.  The Tolleston Dunes parking lot is located at 5800 U.S. Highway 12, Ogden Dunes, IN 46368.

The national park began charging an entrance fee starting on March 31, 2022. The fee is $25 per car for a 1–7-day pass. A $45 annual pass for the Indiana Dunes National Park is also available. Holders of the following federal passes will not pay an entrance fee: Annual, Senior, Veterans/Military/Gold Star Family, 4th Grade, Access (disability), and the Volunteer Passes. Over 3 million visitors come to the Indiana Dunes each year.
