Douglas Center Open House at National Lakeshore

Cooler days are finally here! Join a ranger and find out what the animals are doing to get ready for winter during the Douglas Center Open House every Saturday afternoon at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Explore the center from 1 pm - 3 pm and check out the interactive exhibits, park video, and even the live animal room. If you want to enjoy the changing fall colors, take a hike on the Miller Woods Trail just outside the center.

The Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education is located at 100 North Lake Street in the western portion of the national lakeshore, one mile north of U.S. Highway 12. Kids Rule at National Lakeshore Visitor Center

Are you tired of your children doing the same thing every Sunday afternoon? Then bring them out to Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore's visitor center for an afternoon of fun kid's activities. Join a national park ranger every Sunday from 1 pm - 3 pm in the visitor center's activity room to help your children learn a little more about your neighborhood national park. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

The Indiana Dunes Visitor Center is located at 1215 N. State Road 49 just south of the intersection of State Road 49 and U.S. 20 in Porter, Indiana. Pinhook Bog Open House at the National Lakeshore

Take a self-guided hike into Indiana's only quaking bog during the Pinhook Bog Open House on October 6 from noon to 3 pm. Rangers and volunteers stationed along the trail will help you understand this unique and fragile place filled with carnivorous plants. We recommend that you arrive by 2 pm so you have enough time to complete the hike. This will be the last Pinhook Bog Open House in 2012.

Stewardship Day at the National Lakeshore

Seeds, seeds, and more seeds are needed to help restore natural landscapes throughout Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Mnoké Prairie, a restoration project that is now in its 16th year, is a great source for native seeds. Join park staff on October 13, from 9 am to noon as we venture out into the prairie to collect seeds from several grasses and other prairie plants. All collecting equipment will be provided, but come dressed for the weather. Seed collectors of all ages are welcome.

Meet at the Mnoké Prairie parking lot located on 399 Howe Road in the central portion of the national lakeshore. Fall Colors Hike at the National Lakeshore

Join a ranger for a Fall Colors Hike at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore's Dune Ridge Trail on October 13 from 1 pm - 2:30 pm. Enjoy the changing colors of the trees and learn the mysteries behind this colorful fall phenomenon. The program begins at the trail head of the Dune Ridge Trail located on the south side of the Kemil Beach access parking lot.

Kemil Beach access parking lot is located on East State Park Road, one-mile north of US Highway 12 in the central portion of the national lakeshore. Music Heritage Series at National Lakeshore

Do you enjoy listening to music from the good old days? Then enjoy the monthly performances of the Save the Tunes Council at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Tune up your vocal cords for a sing-along and gather up on October 19, from 7:30 pm - 9 pm at the Indiana Dunes visitor center.

The Save the Tunes Council is a group of local musicians devoted to preserving and passing on folk songs in the traditional way, using a variety of musical instruments including guitar, autoharp, dulcimer, banjo, harmonica, bagpipe, penny whistle, hurdy-gurdy, and other obscure instruments.
