The National Park Service has released the Environmental Assessment for the “East Branch Little Calumet River Use Management Plan” for Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, and is seeking public comment.

This document is a collaborative effort of the National Park Service, the United States Forest Service, and the Urban Waters Initiative to explore and evaluate a full range of recreational opportunities and the environmental impacts of those activities on those portions of the East Branch of the Little Calumet River which lie within Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.

For the purpose of this assessment, the river was divided into four sections (referred to as reaches) based on environmental conditions. They are: Reach 1 - Heron Rookery, Reach 2 - U.S. Highway 20 to Indiana State Road 149, Reach 3 - from Indiana State Road 149 to the Izaak Walton Property, and Reach 4 - from the Burns Waterway Small Boat Harbor to Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk.

The 30-day comment period will begin on Friday, July 8. The Environmental Assessment will be available for review in two different formats. It can be found online at https://parkplanning.nps.gov/indu and a copy of the document will be available for review at the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center at 1215 North State Road 49 in Porter, Indiana and at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore headquarters located at 1100 North Mineral Springs Road in Porter, Indiana.
