Join local plant experts Steve Sass and Nathanael Pilla at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Visitor Center to learn about the importance of native plants.

On Saturday, March 25, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, local plant expert Steve Sass will discuss plant communities and their essential role in the web of life. By including native plants in our home landscapes, we can better the ecosystem that surrounds us. Many people think of native plants as wildflowers while ignoring the full range of plant types that include native shrubs, grasses, sedges, forbs (perennials) and ferns.

On Sunday, March 26, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, join Nathanael Pilla, a regional botanist with Save the Dunes, on a historical and botanical journey through the Indiana Dunes flora and what we can do to minimize our impact where we live. Come celebrate the botanical treasures of the Indiana Dunes.

Most of the species discussed in these programs will be available for sale at the Friends of Indiana Dunes’ 21st Annual Native Plant Sale on Saturday, April 8, from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center. Native Plant Sale pre-order forms are now available at the visitor center front desk. For more information on the Friends’ native plant sale, zrolson@comcast.net.

The Indiana Dunes Visitor Center is located at 1215 North State Road 49, about one mile north of Interstate 94.
