INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL PARK: This winter, enjoy a variety of documentary films at 1:00 pm every Saturday afternoon at Indiana Dunes National Park’s Paul H. Douglas Center. In honor of Black History Month, February’s movies will feature some of America’s civil rights heroes whose lives are commemorated in the national parks.

George Washington Carver, scientist and inventor, is featured on February 8 in two, half-hour films, “Man of Vision” and “Seeds of Success”. On February 15, one of our newer national parks, African American Burial Grounds National Monument, and the 1960’s story “9 from Little Rock” will be highlighted. The 19-minute film, “9 from Little Rock,” was an academy award winner spotlighting the bravery of nine children who were just trying to attend their school. On February 22, enjoy a documentary about Harriett Tubman’s life and the National Historic Site that bears her name. The month-long series wraps up on February 29, with an assortment of films about Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, and Maggie Walker.

Throughout the month, the Douglas Center is also hosting a special exhibit about the national parks that have an African American connection.

The Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education is located at 100 North Lake Street in the Miller neighborhood of Gary.
