This summer, join a ranger for a climb to the top of famous Mount Baldy. Even though the dune is closed for general public use, these ranger-led events allow visitors to experience the beauty and spectacular views from the tallest dune in the national park.
Guided hikes to the summit will occur on Fridays in June, from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm. A special Summer Solstice sunset hike takes place on Friday, June 21, from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm. Bring your camera to catch a spectacular sunset.
In addition, Mount Baldy Open Houses are offered on Sundays in June, between 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm. Please arrive by 3:00 pm to give yourself enough time to complete the hike to the summit. There will be rangers in the parking lot and on the summit providing information about how Mount Baldy formed and why it is moving.
Please note that the Mount Baldy parking lot and beach are open everyday from 6:00 am to 11:00 pm. The dune itself, however, is still closed for general public use. We strongly ask the public to respect and follow posted closure signs and stay out of roped-off areas. The dune is still closed for reasons of public safety and restoration efforts.
Please meet at the Mount Baldy parking lot, located just off of U.S. Highway 12, just west of Michigan City, Indiana. No reservations are required.
