Celebrate summer on Saturday, June 25 with a traditional Swedish Midsummer Celebration from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. and an evening concert by folk musician Chris Vallillo from 7:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s historic Chellberg Farm. This program is free thanks to the support of the Friends of Indiana Dunes. During the afternoon celebration at the farm, enjoy traditional music, dancing, old-time kid’s games, and craft demonstrations. A highlight of the event is the raising of a newly decorated Maypole at 1:15 p.m.You can even bring flowers from home and help in the age-old custom of decorating the Maypole. Enjoy colorfully-costumed performances by a local children's dance group, Nordikids, and the Indianapolis group Dans Norden as they perform traditional favorites. Wrap up the day with a Summer Solstice Evening Concert from 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm in front of the Chellberg Farm House. This outdoor concert features Chris Vallillo, a nationally acclaimed folk musician who strives to “make the people and places of ‘unmetropolitan’ America come to life in song.” Be sure to bring bug repellant, a blanket or chair and possibly a picnic for your family and friends. The concert may be moved to the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center in case of rain. Also, while you’re at the farm for these programs, be sure to check out the farm’s resident chickens.Chickens have recently returned to the Chellberg Farm thanks to the generosity of the Dunes Learning Center and will remain at Chellberg into the fall season.
