Program Announcement #1 Release Date: July 1, 2014 Park Focus Programs at National Lakeshore There’s always something different to focus on in a park as diverse as Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Join a ranger at the Paul H. Douglas Center on Saturdays and Sundays during the summer for activities and topics ranging from guest speakers, new research finds, or favorite park places. The programs change each week, but the program location remains the same. Check the park’s website or call the Douglas Center for specific topics at 219-395-1821. The Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education is located in the western portion of the national lakeshore at 100 North Lake Street, about one mile north of U.S. Highway 12. Program Announcement #2 Release Date: July 1, 2014 Kid’s Rule at National Lakeshore Visitor Center Join a ranger at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s visitor center for a Sunday afternoon of kid’s activities, puppet shows, stories, and fun. Stop in the center’s activity room between 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. so your children can learn a little more about our neighborhood national park. All children must be accompanied by an adult. The Indiana Dunes Visitor Center is located at 1215 N. State Road 49 just south of the intersection of 49 and U.S. 20 in Porter, Indiana. Program Announcement #3 Release Date: July 1, 2014 Music Heritage Series at National Lakeshore Join in with the Save the Tunes Council as they perform traditional music associated with the Sounds of Summer at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Tune up your vocal cords and gather up for a sing-along on July 18, from 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Visitor Center. The Save the Tunes Council is a group of local musicians devoted to preserving and passing on folk songs in the traditional way, using a variety of musical instruments including guitar, autoharp, dulcimer, banjo, harmonica, bagpipe, penny whistle, hurdy gurdy, and other obscure instruments. Meet at the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center located at 1215 N. State Road 49 just south of the intersection of 49 and U.S. 20 in Porter, Indiana. Program Announcement #4 Release Date: July 1, 2014 Stewardship Day at the National Lakeshore – Bailly Cemetery On July 19 from 9:00 a.m. to noon, join a ranger in helping to care for your local national park as we wash the stone walls and spruce up the grounds of the historic Bailly Cemetery. Wear comfortable clothes; work gloves and equipment will be provided. Insect repellent and sunscreen are recommended. Meet at the park headquarters’ parking lot. The park headquarters parking lot is located at 1100 Mineral Springs Road in Porter, Indiana. Program Announcement #6 Release Date: July 1, 2014 Rangers Choice Hike at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Explore Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s exceptional diversity of life on a special ranger-led hike on Friday mornings during the summer. Meet the ranger at the Visitor Center on July 11, 18, and 25 at 9:00 a.m. and then caravan to that week’s featured location for a two-hour hike.
Program Announcement #7 Release Date: July 1, 2014 Our Duneland Heritage at National Lakeshore Explore Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s historic Chellberg Farm during this open house hosted by a ranger and see a traditional craft or farming demonstration on July 19, from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. The Chellberg/Bailly parking lot is on Mineral Springs Road between U.S. 20 and Highway 12 in Porter, Indiana. Program Announcement #8 Release Date: July 1, 2014 Campground Program at National Lakeshore Join a ranger around the campfire and learn about the incredible diversity of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and work that’s done to help keep the park healthy. This program is offered on July 12, 19 and 26 at 8:00 p.m. at the Dunewood Campground Amphitheater. Short-term parking is available for amphitheater programs at the campground registration building.
Program Announcement #9 Release Date: July 1, 2014 Chellberg Farm Open House at National Lakeshore
Program Announcement #10 Release Date: July 1, 2014 Pinhook Bog Open House at National Lakeshore Explore Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s Pinhook Bog during three Sunday afternoon open houses being offered in July. Tour the bog on your own and talk to rangers stationed along the trail who will help you understand this unique place filled with carnivorous plants. Allow about one hour to walk the trail and tour the bog. This program will be held on Sunday July 13, 20 and 27 from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Program Announcement #11 Release Date: July 1, 2014 Miller Woods Hike at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Take a Sunday afternoon stroll with a ranger through Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s Miller Woods. This trail features one of the rarest habitats in the country, black oak savanna. This program is offered every Sunday in July and begins at 1:30 p.m. Depending on the weather the length of this hike can vary from one-half mile to three miles. For information on this week’s hike, call the Paul H. Douglas Center at 219-395-1821.
Program Announcement #12 Release Date: July 1, 2014 Kayak Fishing with a Ranger at National Lakeshore Join a ranger on July 12 at 7:00 a.m. for a kayak paddle to fish for the elusive Skamania Steelhead. Meet at Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Depending on the weather, the program will take place either on Lake Michigan or the Burns Waterway. You must provide all of your own equipment, obey state fishing laws, and wear a lifejacket. Portage Lakefront & Riverwalk is located off of Indiana Highway 249, north of Interstate 94. Program Announcement #13 Release Date: July 1, 2014 Firefly Walk at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Come join a ranger for an evening Firefly Walk on Friday July 11 and 25 at 8:15 p.m. at the Bailly/Chellberg parking lot in Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. During this 60-minute program, learn all about the amazing “lightning bug” while enjoying a leisurely evening stroll. Insect repellent and a flashlight are recommended. The Chellberg/Bailly parking lot is on Mineral Springs Road between U.S. 20 and Highway 12 in Porter, Indiana. Program Announcement #14 Release Date: July 1, 2014 Fort Building Contest at the National Lakeshore Form a family or small group team and test your architectural skills by building a fort out of natural materials found in the Nature Play Zone at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s Douglas Center. This program takes place on July 5 beginning at 10:00 a.m. Fun prizes will be awarded throughout the day. The Paul H. Program Announcement #15 Release Date: July 1, 2014 Insects in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Learn about the importance of the most numerous animals on earth – Insects! Join insect expert Jim Louderman from The Field Museum of Chicago from 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. on July 12 at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s Douglas Center. Jim will show insects that have been found in the national lakeshore, as well as, some from other parts of the world. The Paul H. Program Announcement #16 Release Date: July 1, 2014 Soundwalk in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Join members of the Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology at 1:00 p.m. on July 19 in celebrating World Listening Day at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s Douglas Center. The members of the society will give tips on listening to the symphony of sounds in nature that most of us never even notice. The program will begin inside the Douglas Center then will move outside to enjoy some of the sounds of Miller Woods.
The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is one of 401 units of the National Park System ranging from Yellowstone to the Statue of Liberty. Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore includes 15 miles of the southern shoreline of Lake Michigan and 15,000 acres of beach, woods, marshes, and prairie in the northwest corner of Indiana.
