February Stargazing Program at National Lakeshore

INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL LAKESHORE Join members from various local astronomical societies, including the Chicago Astronomical Society, with their telescopes to get a closer look at the night skies over Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. This month's program takes place onSaturday, February 6at the national lakeshore's Kemil Beach parking lotat5:30 pm. In celebration of the National Park Service Centennial and the fiftieth birthday of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, a special stargazing program is being offered on the firstSaturdayof the month through November of 2016.

During February, the brightest stars of the year are overhead. Sirius, Procyon, Rigel, Betelgeuse, Aldebaran, Castor, Pollux and Capella as well as the great nebula of Orion put on a spectacular show. The societies will bring their telescopes so visitors can get a closer look at the night sky, but feel free to bring a pair of binoculars from home, too. Please be sure to dress for the weather as there is no building or restrooms to warm up in.
