Stewardship Opportunity at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore


INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL LAKESHORE: Join staff and fellow volunteers for a morning of stewardship on Saturday, October 21, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s Mnoké Prairie. We will harvest seeds from the tall grass prairie, which will be used to restore Mnoké and other prairies at the national lakeshore. Please meet at the Mnoké Prairie parking lot. Wear comfortable clothes. All tools and protective equipment will be provided.

The Mnoké Prairie parking lot is located on Howe Road, just south of the Little Calumet River in Porter. Nature Play Zone Program at National Lakeshore


INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL LAKESHORE: Kids of all ages are invited to celebrate and play in the outdoors at the Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore on Saturday, October 7, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. The program will include building forts, hiking in Miller Woods, doing a free craft activity, and feeding our resident fish, turtles, snakes, toads, and frogs. Parents can watch their children’s creativity blossom during these relaxing two hours. Rangers will lead the programs and there is no need to pre-register.

The Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education is located in the western portion of the national lakeshore at 100 North Lake Street, about one mile north of U.S. Highway 12 in the Miller neighborhood of Gary. Fall Colors Hike Offered at National Lakeshore


INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL LAKESHORE: If you enjoy the changing colors of the fall, join a ranger for the Fall Colors Hike at historic Chellberg Farm. The Fall Colors Hike takes place at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s Chellberg Farm on Saturday, October 21, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. The hike begins in the Bailly Homestead and Chellberg Farm parking lot. Please dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes

Chellberg Farm is home to several historic structures including the main house, the fur trapping building, and the Bailly cemetery. Various animals call the farm their home so be sure to stay after the hike to pay them a visit and explore all the farm has to offer.

Stargazing at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore


INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL LAKESHORE: Join fellow astronomy lovers and enjoy our night sky from one of the darkest spots in Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Members from the Chicago Astronomical Society, Michiana Astronomical Society, and Calumet Astronomical Society will share their telescopes as they introduce the night skies to visitors on Saturday, October 21, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm Central Time at the national lakeshore’s Kemil Beach parking lot. This is an outdoor program, so please dress for the weather.

During this month’s stargazing program, the Milky Way stretches across the sky from southwest to northeast. The Andromeda Galaxy and companions are high up. The Double Cluster in Perseus is visible with color contrasting stars. The Stargazing Program is presented on the third Saturday of each month throughout the year. Times vary each month with the season.

The Kemil Beach parking lot is located one mile north of U.S. Highway 12 on East State Park Road (300E).
