News Release Date: December 9, 2016

Join tens of thousands of volunteers throughout the Americas on Thursday, December 29 for the annual Christmas Bird Count. You can take part in the count at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Families, students, amateurs, birders, and scientists alike, arm themselves with binoculars, bird guides, and checklists and go out on an annual mission to count the local bird population.

This is your chance to become a citizen scientist and make an enormous contribution to conservation. The Audubon Society and other organizations use the data collected in this longest running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations and to guide conservation actions.

This event is free, but requires advance registration by December 26th. To register or learn more about the annual bird count at the national lakeshore, contact ranger Christine Gerlach at 219-395-1885 or e-mail us.
