INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL PARK: Central Avenue in Indiana Dunes National Park was closed on October 26 so large trucks can safely use it during a beach nourishment project. This Army Corps of Engineers funded project will replace sand on the national park’s Central Avenue Beach that has been lost due to severe erosion from high water levels in Lake Michigan. The road will be closed the entire length between US. Highway 12 and its northern terminus at the beach.
The beach nourishment work is scheduled to be completed by December 24, 2020 and will place 56,000 tons of sand on Central Avenue Beach. This beach area had already been closed the entire summer and fall due to dangerous conditions caused by the severe erosion.
