INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL PARK: Get out of the house for a day of fun at Indiana Dunes National Park’s Cabin Fever Festival. Join staff and visitors on Saturday, February 1, from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm at both the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center and the Paul H. Douglas Center for plenty of indoor and outdoor activities with a Groundhog Day theme.

At the visitor center, activities include a 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm snowshoe hike, a 2:00 pm showing of Animal Planet’s Groundhog Day film, and live music and games from 9:30 am to 11:30 am. A kid’s Groundhog Day-themed scavenger hunt will be available all day.

At the Paul H. Douglas Center, a puppet show featuring the groundhog, the park’s largest hibernator, will be performed at 11:00 am and 2:30 pm. In addition, learn about the groundhog’s lifestyle, make a groundhog craft, or read a groundhog story. You can even learn about the groundhog’s tree-climbing “relative,” the squirrel, in a 1:00 pm showing of “Nature – A Squirrels Guide to Success.”

If you want to get outside, stretch your legs on a ranger-led hike at the national park’s Heron Rookery Trail from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. The trail follows the banks of the Little Calumet River and you may see some steelhead trout. Meet the ranger at Heron Rookery Trail’s east parking lot.

The Indiana Dunes Visitor Center is located at 1215 North State Road 49, in Porter, Indiana. The Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education is located at 100 North Lake Street in Gary and the Heron Rookery Trail’s east parking lot is located at 1320 North 600 East, Michigan City, Indiana.
