Make it a beach day. Join rangers every Saturday this summer from 1:00 pm to 30 minutes past sunset, at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s West Beach. Activities will include kayaking, paddle boarding, swimming, a sunset hike, and a beach campfire. Try out kayaking, paddle boarding, and snorkeling starting at 2:00 pm. All equipment is provided free, including mandatory lifejackets. As evening draws near, a one-hour sunset hike on the Dune Succession Trail will start at the Ranger Contact Station located at the north end of the West Beach parking lot. The trail offers stunning views of the sunset over Lake Michigan with the Chicago skyline as a backdrop. A beach campfire, complete with marshmallow toasting, will start shortly after the hike.
There is a $6 per car parking fee charged until 7:00 pm. Please bring a picnic dinner and don’t forget warmer clothing for the evening sunset and beach campfire. Meet at the West Beach parking lot located at 376 North County Line Road in Portage.
