Join park ranger Kip Walton and volunteer TJ Caracci to learn about backpacking for fitness and to go for a hike at the Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education on Saturday, May 27, from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm.
Learn how to get stronger, burn calories, have a healthier heart, and improve your posture all while exploring the beautiful trails of the national lakeshore. Come learn the basics of backpacking for fitness; a low impact fitness activity that you can do at any stage in your life.
The program begins in Paul H. Douglas Center with a short presentation before heading out to the Miller Woods trail for a hike lasting about three hours. Be sure to dress for the weather and bring a comfortable backpack weighing 10-20 lbs. Please bring your own water. There are no water stations along the hike route.
The Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education is located in the western portion of the national lakeshore at 100 North Lake Street, about one mile north of U.S. Highway 12 in the Miller neighborhood of Gary.
