Join in a celebration of local art inspired by the native flora and fauna of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. National Park Service staff and local artists will be cutting the ribbon for this new art installation at 1:00 p.m., November 20 at the Paul H. Douglas Center located at 100 North Lake Street in the Miller section of Gary Indiana.

Artist Melissa Washburn used a shipping container as a canvas to showcase the natural beauty of the national lakeshore’s Miller Woods. Melissa is an artist/illustrator/graphic designer who grew up in upstate New York, in the foothills of the Adirondacks, but has lived in the Midwest since 1996. Her fascination with things that run, fly, and grow has led to editorial commissions for publications such as Edible Indy, Charlotte Home and Garden, and Spirituality and Health Magazine. She was a 2012-2013 recipient of an Individual Artist Program grant from the Indiana Arts Commission, serves on the board of the newly formed Valparaiso Creative Council, and is one of the founders of Community Supported Art Valparaiso, a unique project that supports local art and artists. You can see more of her work at www.melissawashburn.com

This artwork was sponsored and commissioned by the Calumet Artist Residency for their Gary Nature Project. The Gary Nature Project uses hikes, the arts, and nature-education to draw awareness to the proud ecological legacy of our city. It is supported by a generous grant from the Knight Fund at the Legacy Foundation. The Calumet Artist Residency is thankful to everyone involved in this project. Co-founder and board member Corey Hagelberg and board president Sam Love will be on hand to talk about their vision of connecting people, art, and nature in Gary. The Calumet Artist Residency will offer a free Gary Nature Project hike through the Miller Woods immediately following the dedication.

A special thanks will be given to Sue Antoszewksi, Director of Customer Experience at Digital Graphic Solutions for the wonderful, timely and professional installation of the art work display.
