Volunteers Needed for Miller Woods Restoration Work at National Lakeshore

Volunteers are needed on Saturday mornings in October to help with restoration work at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s Miller Woods.  Join Student Conservation Association interns at the national lakeshore’s Paul H. Douglas Center at 11:00 am on October 14, 21 and 28. These Saturday Miller Woods restoration programs will last about 1 ½ hours. No experience is needed.

Each morning begins with a brief history of the area and safety precautions, then you’ll set out on the Miller Woods Trail to clip seed heads from two invasive plants - phragmites and cattails. This work will help in the restoration of the Miller Woods wetlands. Be sure to wear comfortable clothes; tools and work gloves will be furnished. 

Afterward the stewardship activity, you may want to take a hike through Miller Woods to enjoy spectacular fall wildflowers and migrating birds. Or bring the family to build a fort and play in the adjacent Nature Play Zone, make a free craft, or help feed the fish, reptiles and amphibians who live in the Douglas Center’s animal room.

Douglas Center for Environmental Education is located in the western portion of the national lakeshore at 100 North Lake Street, about one mile north of U.S. Highway 12 in the Miller section of Gary.
