Perspectives on the President's House Site

July 24, 2012 Posted by: Kevin

What stood out for me today was how symbolic the Liberty Bell is to America.  I hadn't realized that the most likely reason it cracked was because it rang so often.  I also find it interesting that in the place we were at [President's House Site], they told the slave's perspective instead of the slave masters.

Like you I was struck by the words of Oney Judge, Hercules and Washington's other slaves. The juxtaposition of the Declaration of Independence and Oney's cry for freedom is something I will not soon forget.

The posts just keep getting better. What I like about Kevin's post is that it made me remember that nothing is perfect. Even the Liberty Bell, made at one of the best foundries in the world, was not perfect. But no imperfection, not even a crack, can silence the real message of the Liberty Bell.

Children often ask why the bell cracked and are disappointed to find the answer is "wear and tear" over many years. I think they're looking for a more dramatic answer.
