Glacier National Park
The spectacular Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park played an important role in the history of park road development. Building a motor road over towering mountains posed a formidable challenge. From 1924 to 1933 the National Park Service and the Bureau of Public Roads worked to build a road that hugs the mountainsides with a series of terraces, retaining walls, bridges, and tunnels that minimize damage to the sensitive terrain while providing spectacular views.
This model project served as the basis of a cooperative road-building program between the Park Service and the Bureau of Public Roads that still governs park road development today.
