Superintendent Marilyn H. Parris announces free entrance to Haleakala National Park on Saturday September 30, 2006. "The park will be open and available for the public to enjoy free of charge," commented Parris, "in honor of the thirteenth annual National Public Lands Day." National Public Lands Day (NPLD) provides an opportunity to explore land in the National Parks, National Forests, BLM lands, and Wildlife Refuges across the country. Dedicated in 1993, NPLD strives to connect volunteer opportunities with America’s land management agencies. "One way to encourage volunteers is to make the initial connection with the land." says Haleakala Chief of interpretation Dominic Cardea. Many volunteer opportunities exist year round at Haleakala.
