Northbound George Washington Memorial Parkway Lane Closures Begin Aug. 10 Between Spout Run Parkway and Route 123

Northbound George Washington Memorial Parkway traffic will need to exit at Spout Run Parkway and follow signs to Route 123 to re-enter George Washington Memorial Parkway.

McLean, VA – The National Park Service will temporarily close all northbound lanes of the George Washington Memorial Parkway between Spout Run Parkway and Route 123 beginning Aug. 10 through Sept. 1, 2026.  

The closures will allow crews to safely inspect, prune and remove trees as part of ongoing maintenance efforts on the recently rehabilitated George Washington Memorial Parkway’s north section. Ongoing tree maintenance supports that investment and helps preserve a safer and more beautiful parkway. 

Closure Schedule

Northbound lanes between Spout Run Parkway and Route 123 will close: 

Mondays through Thursdays  

9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.  

Aug. 10 – Sept. 1  

The schedule is weather dependent and may change as conditions require. The parkway will remain open northbound during morning and evening rush hours. Southbound lanes will remain open throughout the project.  

Detour Information

During each closure, all northbound drivers must:  

1. Exit the parkway at Spout Run Parkway.  

2. Follow posted detour signs.  

3. Re-enter the parkway at Route 123.  

Drivers should plan ahead, expect delays and allow additional travel time. Consider alternate routes during the closure periods. Drivers should slow down, remain alert and follow posted signs and directions from workers. Work zones may include crews, vehicles and equipment on the roadway.

Trees along the parkway require regular inspection and care. Crews will assess tree conditions, prune branches and remove trees when necessary. This work supports the long-term health of the parkway’s landscape and surrounding natural areas.
