Free Battle Walks and Talks to Celebrate 50 years of Women as Licensed Battlefield Guides May 12 & 13

Women Licensed Battlefield Guides at Gettysburg National Military Park are inviting the public to special, free programs on Mother’s Day weekend, May 12 and 13. The programs are a community service presented to commemorate 50 years of women in guiding at Gettysburg, and are being offered exclusively by female Licensed Battlefield Guides.
 
Programs take place throughout the Gettysburg battlefield and the town, highlighting topics such as the home-front, Evergreen cemetery, fighting at the Peach Orchard, the Wheatfield, and Culp's Hill, Generals Lee and Meade, and the myths and legends of the 20th Maine at Little Round Top.

Programs on Saturday, May 12

10 am - noon, “Wounded Houses, Shattered Lives” by Linda Clark, Licensed Battlefield Guide. Meet at the intersection of North Stratton and East Stevens Streets (at the Coster Avenue sign, beside 245 Stratton Street). Free parking along Stratton, Water, Stevens, and Barlow Streets. Note: This tour involves about a one mile walk through the town of Gettysburg.

10 am - 11 am, “July 2:  Lee and Meade Prepare for Battle” by Mary Turk-Meena, Licensed Battlefield Guide. Meet along West Confederate Avenue near the Louisiana and Mississippi State Memorials.

Noon - 2 pm, “Defending the Salient: The Fight at the Peach Orchard” by Therese Orr, Licensed Battlefield Guide. Meet at the Peach Orchard. Park on Sickles Avenue just east of Emmitsburg Road.

1 pm - 3 pm, “Notable Gettysburg Citizens in Evergreen Cemetery” by Deb Novotny, Licensed Battlefield Guide. Meet at Civil War Women’s Memorial just behind Evergreen Cemetery Gatehouse. Park along Baltimore Pike.

Programs on Sunday, May 13

9 am - 10 am & 10 am - 11 am (two one-hour talks), "Revenge for Reynolds! The Charge of the Pennsylvania Reserves" by Kim Hostetter, Licensed Battlefield Guide. Park along Ayres Avenue. Meet near Pennsylvania Reserves’ monument in the Wheatfield.

11 am - 1 pm, “Culp’s Hill: A Forgotten Key” by Ellen Gonsalves, Licensed Battlefield Guide. Meet at Spangler’s Spring, Culp’s Hill. Note: Visitors should be prepared for uphill walking on uneven terrain, from the base of Culp’s Hill to the summit.

2 pm - 3 pm, “The 20th Maine: Myths, Legends, and a Bayonet Charge to Preserve the Left Flank” by Christina Moon, Licensed Battlefield Guide. Meet at the pathway leading to the 20th Maine Infantry monument on southern slope of Little Round Top. Park along Sedgwick Avenue.
