When and Where and How to Get There

DYou are invited to join ecological experts, scientists and naturalists for exploration and scientific discovery in the Jamaica Bay unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. This 24 hour event will start at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 10, 2016 and conclude at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 11, 2016.

Volunteers will report to base camp at Jacob Riis Park, 16702 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, Queens, NY 11694. They will then go out as teams to conduct surveys led by scientists and expert naturalists to identify as many organisms as possible and provide a snapshot of biodiversity.

Volunteers should register for specific survey times (beginning at 1:30, 5:30 and 8:00 pm on Friday, June 10, 2016 and 6:00, 8:00 and 10:00 am on Saturday, June 11, 2016) through our eventbrite page. Registration is open now!

We will use an app called iNaturalist to record species data for the 2016 Jamaica Bay BioBlitz. This app will make gathering data easy and fun - plus you don't have to be an expert! Just snap and post and experts in the field will review and identify the species. If you want to use your smart phone and tablet and the iNaturalist app, you can create an account at http://www.inaturalist.org/signup. This works best if you do it from a computer and not your phone. Once you have an account, you can join the 2016 Jamaica Bay BioBlitz - 2016 National Parks BioBlitz- Gateway: Jamaica Bay BioBlitz. We will also offer short iNaturalist tutorials throughout the BioBlitz to help you learn how to use the app.

In addition to the surveys, exhibits and nature walks will occur throughout the event.

All participants must sign in at the event. Sign in is open Friday, June 10, 2016 from noon to 8:30 p.m. The BioBlitz begins at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 10, 2016.

Sign in is open Saturday, June 11, 2016 from 5:30 am to 10:30 am. The BioBlitz ends at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 11, 2016.
