How Will COVID-19 affect my day at the beach?

Gateway has three beaches designated for swimming: Jacob Riis Park, Great Kills Park and Sandy Hook.
Lifeguards are on duty at Great Kills Park, Jacob Riis Park and Sandy Hook from 10 am to 6 pm.
Fort Tilden beach is unprotected. Swimming is not allowed.
The beach is accessible for passive recreation.

Jacob Riis Park Operations and Temporary Changes in Services


Current Hours of Operation:
9 pm closure

Parking:

Parking is reduced to approximately 50% capacity.
Fees are being charged. $10 per car, or $60 for the season.

Picnic Area:

The Jacob Riis Picnic Area is open.

Bathrooms:

Bathroom facilities are open.

Sports and Group Activities:

Group sports, group activities, and gatherings are not permitted.
Basketball courts are open.

Playgrounds:

Playgrounds are open.

Food Service:

Food Service is available.

Beach:

Lifeguards are on duty daily from 10 am to 6 pm..

Current Beach Rules Prohibit:

  • Alcohol
  • Smoking
  • Tents or shelters (baby tents allowed, a baby or toddler must be present)
  • Barbecuing and open fires
  • Group gatherings including group picnics
  • Sports
  • Glass containers
  • Coolers that are more than 24 quarts in size per group
  • Dogs and kites from March 15-September 15
  • Entering areas with symbolic fencing
  • Climbing on rocks/groins
  • Accessing the dunes (except at designated dune crossings)

Standard Operations:

  • Alcohol is prohibited throughout the park, except in designated areas or by permit.

  • Smoking is only permitted in designated parking areas.

  • Dogs must be leashed at all times.

Fort Tilden Operations and Temporary Changes in Services

Current Hours of Operation:
9 pm closure

Fort Tilden is accessible for passive recreation.

Bathrooms:
Limited port-a-johns are available.

Parking:

Fort Tilden is closed to un-authorized vehicular access.
Parking is typically not available within Fort Tilden except by permit from Memorial Day-Labor Day.
2019 Fishing Permits will be honored in 2020 season until further notice.

Picnic Area:

The Fort Tilden Group Picnic Area is temporarily closed.
Permits for the Fort Tilden Picnic Area will not be issued until further notice.
Barbecuing and group picnicking are currently not allowed within Fort Tilden.

Sports and group activities:

Group sports, group activities, and gatherings are not permitted.

Fort Tilden Community Garden:

The Fort Tilden Community Garden is temporarily closed.
Special Use Permits for the Fort Tilden Community Garden are not being issued until further notice.

Great Kills Park Operations and Temporary Changes in Services

Current Hours of Operation:
9 pm closure
Great Kills Ranger Station:

Temporarily Closed

MUP:

The Multiple Use Path is accessible for recreational use, such as biking, walking, and running.

Boat Launch:

The boat launch is available for use. Parking in the boat launch parking area is by permit only. 2019 permits are being honored for the 2020 season until further notice.

Great Kills Park Beach:

Lifeguards are on duty from 10 am to 6 pm.

Fishing/Parking Permits:

2019 Fishing/Parking Permits will be honored in 2020 season until further notice.

Bathrooms:

Bathrooms are available at the Beach Center and limited port-a-johns are available throughout Great Kills Park.

Playgrounds:

Playgrounds are open.

Sandy Hook Operations and Temporary Changes in Services

Current Hours of Operation:
9 pm closure

Beaches:
Lifeguards are on duty from 10 am to 6 pm daily. Advisory signs noting which beaches are lifguarded will be at the entrance and updated daily. Beach wheelchairs are available at beaches C, D, E, G (Gunnison), and I. Please email GATE_SAHOVisitorCenter@nps.gov for information and to make a reservation. You will need to email a copy of a photo I.D. to reserve a wheelchair.

Current Beach Rules prohibit:

  • Alcohol
  • Smoking
  • Tents or shelters (baby tents allowed, a baby or toddler must be present)
  • Barbecuing and open fires
  • Group gatherings including group picnics
  • Sports
  • Glass containers
  • Coolers that are more than 24 quarts in size per group.
  • Dogs and kites from March 15-September 15. (Leashed dogs are allowed on bay-side beaches)
  • Entering areas with symbolic fencing
  • Climbing on rocks/groins
  • Accessing the dunes (except at designated dune crossings)

Standard Operations:

  • Alcohol is prohibited except by permit.

  • Smoking is only permitted in designated parking areas.

  • Dogs must be leashed at all times, and are not allowed on the beach between March 15 and September 15.

  • Carry-in carry-out garbage policy is in effect.
