NEW YORK - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will hold a public information meeting for the Comprehensive Restoration Plan for the Hudson Raritan Estuary on Thursday, May 20, 2010 at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, Cross Bay Blvd., Queens, New York. Two sessions will be held from 3-5 p.m. and from 6-8 p.m. with presentations at 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

The Army Corps and The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey released a Draft Hudson-Raritan Estuary (HRE) Comprehensive Restoration Plan in 2009 that was developed in partnership with the NY/NJ Harbor Estuary Program (HEP). The HEP is a consortium of federal, state, municipal, non-governmental organizations and other regional stakeholders focused on improving the quality of the harbor estuary. The Plan is the HEP-endorsed habitat restoration plan for the NY-NJ Harbor.

The purpose of this meeting is to introduce the Comprehensive Restoration Plan to the public and offer an opportunity for stakeholders to identify potential restoration actions that could implement the goals of the overall plan in this particular community. This information is aimed at aiding in the revision and further development of the Plan. Attendees’ review and assistance is being sought to tailor the plan to meet local needs and opportunities.

This meeting is an opportunity to find out what’s occurring with current planning and projects, for the public to gain ideas and gather input from attendees, and to meet others involved with the restoration in this particular area.

The Plan was prepared in collaboration with the region’s state and federal agencies and non–governmental organizations as a part of the Hudson–Raritan Estuary Ecosystem Restoration Feasibility Study This Plan has been adopted by the HEP Partners as the "path forward" for future restoration in the Estuary.
