Gateway NRA General Management Newsletter Now Available in Four Languages

Gateway National Recreation Area is pleased to announce that its 2009 General Management Plan Newsletter is now available in four languages. "The diversity of the region surrounding Gateway is rich with many cultures. By providing the newsletter about this new planning process in Mandarin Chinese, Spanish and Russian, in addition to English, we hope to improve the dialogue between the park and the many visitors that recreate at Gateway," said Gateway General Superintendent Barry Sullivan. "This planning only comes around once every 20-plus years, so we need to not only share news about this effort but also receive valuable input from as many park users as possible."

Visitors can access the newsletter in English, Mandarin Chinese, Russian and Spanish at the park website at www.nps.gov/gate

A General Management Plan (GMP) is the document that guides a National Park’s significant management decisions and therefore the future direction of the park; a GMP serves the park for approximately 20 years. How the park cares for its natural and cultural resources, and what recreational opportunities are available to visitors will all be influenced by the new plan. The National Park Service strongly encourages the public to take an active role in developing the new GMP by participating in open house meetings, and by offering feedback through e-mail communications or through an on-line process. The park held Open Houses in July and September.

The Gateway NRA General Management Plan is scheduled to be completed in approximately 5 years, though at a complex park like Gateway it can take slightly longer. It is a multi-year project that should completed by summer, 2012, a timetable that gives the public ample opportunities to offer ideas and comments on draft plans as they develop.
