Watrous, NM: "The Uncommon Soldier: The Life and Service of the New Mexico Volunteers during the Civil War" will be featured on Thursday June 20, 2013 at 7:00PM at the CCHP/Santa Fé Trail Interpretive Center, 116 Bridge Street, Las Vegas, NM, 87701. For many, the history of the Civil War in the Southwest is largely unknown. Specifically the crucial role of the Hispanic soldier who served in the volunteer regiments organized to defend the New Mexico Territory at the onset of the conflict. Though largely forgotten by history books, their unique legacy is cemented. If it were not for these brave individuals and their sacrifices, the Civil War may have concluded altogether differently. Join Ranger Greg Baker from Fort Union National Monument, and learn of the life and service of these men of valor along with the excoriating difficulties they overcame to ensure a free New Mexico Territory. The Glimpses of the Past series are free in partnership with the Citizens Committee for Historic Preservation, Las Vegas, NM. |
