Fort Union Glimpses from the Past Program

Thursday Evening, June 18th - 7pm

CCHP, 116 Bridge Street

This month’s Fort Union National Monument’s Gimpses from the Past program will feature Henrietta Martinez Christmas presenting “Chaperito, Land Grant, Parish and Ghost Town.” The program will be held free to the public at The Santa Fe Trail Interpretive Center/CCHP at 116 Bridge Street at 7pm on Thursday, June 18th.

Henrietta Martinez grew up in Las Vegas. Her Martinez, Tapia, and Sanchez families were originally from Los Valles de San Agustin and Trementina. She now lives in Corrales.

Henrietta has been a historical and genealogical researcher for the past 30 years. She is a member of the New Mexico Historical Society and serves as a board member. She has written over 100 articles for various historic journals and given many talks throughout the state.

The program she will present relates to the research and writing of her most recent book on Chaperito, a now ghost town 25 miles southeast of Las Vegas. The rich history of many small settlements in the San Miguel county speak to the fortitude of early settler families, their hard work, faith and family support. Henrietta will talk about the research that led her through the journey of writing the book, discovering other ghost towns in the area, and following family migrations in the area. Many photographs of both historic buildings and remaining churches highlight the research and the family stories she shares. For further information call CCHP 425-8803
