Fort Union National Monument announces its annual Fort Union Days Event to be held on June 20 and 21, 2015. The event weekend is FREE to the public and runs from 8:00 am to 10:30 pm on Saturday, and 8:00 am to 4:30 pm on Sunday. This year, programs and activities will concentrate on the latter years of 1876-1881. The event will include guest speakers emphasizing the Southwestern campaigns that occurred during this time period and the lasting impacts on the lands and peoples of the Southwest that were brought forth from Fort Union as a result of these frenzied and pivotal years. Presentations will include a 19th century military tent encampment, historic weapons and artillery demonstrations, a tribute to the service of the 9th US Cavalry, traditional music of the Jicarilla Apache, and a Saturday evening astronomy program. Additionally, an exhibitors and children’s tent area will highlight local historical, cultural, and recreational opportunities that can be found in Northern New Mexico. |
