Centuries after the Lost Colony, Roanoke Island witnessed a new era of history emerge during the Civil War. In February of 1862, the Battle of Roanoke Island, the first amphibious military landing for the United States brough the island under control of the Unionf forces. Finding safe haven on the Union-controlled island, many enslaved people sought refuge on the island. Over time, the small camp of formerly enslaved people became a crowded colony with other 4,000 people seeking freedom the island and colony offered. The Freedmen's Colony, however, would not last and would be closed in 1867, scattering the people who had made the island their home.
