Discover the cultural and natural resources at Fort Matanzas! Ferry boat reservations are required for groups traveling to the fort. Reservations are taken on a first-call basis beginning in August for that school year. Call (904) 471-0116 to make reservations. In addition to, or in place of traveling to the fort, groups can explore other areas of the park under their teachers' direction. From the main Visitor Center entrance, teachers may guide groups on the half-mile nature trail boardwalk through the woods, hike the marsh trail, and/or use the picnic area set among the old, spreading live oak trees. Travel Back in Time with a Visit to the Fort
Contact us in advance at 904-471-0116 to make Reservations. Make a 7 minute boat ride to Fort Matanzas and hear a 5-10 minute ranger talk on how the Spanish protected the Matanzas River, the back door to St. Augustine. Experience the spaces where seven soldiers were stationed for thirty days and discuss how they survived. Explore the fort for approximately 30 minutes. (50 minutes). The Pre/Post Field Trip or Life of a Spanish Soldier lesson plans may be used before or after your visit.
Walk on the Wild Side on the Nature Trail (0.6 miles)
This teacher-led experience does not require reservations. Take your group on the wooden boardwalk to discover a natural Florida hammock. Discover wildlife, native vegetation, and contemplate the story of the ancient dunes. (30—45 minutes). The Animal Adaptations lesson plan may be used as a pre/post activity.
Explore the Estuary as Scientists
This teacher-led experience does not require reservations. Take time to investigate what makes this salt marsh habitat special. Walk along the shoreline and scan the water for wildlife. (30 minutes—1 hour). The Food Chain lesson plan may be used as a pre/post activity.
Analyze the Atlantic Ocean
This teacher-led experience does not require reservations. Compare the diverse ecosystems of the oceanside beach with the riverside beach. Study the dunes to learn about the effect of nature, animals, and humans on our beaches. (45 minutes—1 hour). The Sea Level Rise lesson plan maybe used before or after this visit.
Tips for Field Trips:
- Make Reservations in advance. Due to carrying capacity on the boat, group size is limited to 35 individuals.
- Review the Teacher Checklist.
- Arrive 30 minutes before your boat reservation time to park, walk to the Visitor Center, and pick up your tickets.
- Bring sun protection, water, mosquito repellant, closed toed shoes, and a trash bag.
