Fort Bowie NHS Seeks Enthusiastic Visitor Service Volunteers

 Bowie, AZ – Fort Bowie National Historic Site is seeking to fill two visitor service volunteer positions. The first term is April 3 to June 30, 2016, and the second term spans June 26 to September 30, 2016. Candidates should complete the application form found on www.volunteer.gov. Duties: Volunteers will staff the visitor center, which is open daily 8 am to 4 pm. They share  the history of Fort Bowie, the Chiricahua Apaches, and area events to a diverse audience of park visitors. Volunteers will accurately answer questions, provide park and area orientation, create and present interpretive programs, assist with projects, and operate a cash register for the Western National Parks Association store. 

 

Qualifications: The incumbent should have the ability to communicate and interact with a diverse public. Excellent customer service skills, strong research skills, and the ability to develop interpretive programs are preferred. First Aid and CPR certifications are desired. Incumbent must complete a federal background investigation and possess a valid state driver’s license.

 

Work Environment: Fort Bowie is a remote location accessed by an unimproved, gravel road. There is limited cell phone service and no personal Internet access. The closest grocery store and medical facilities are located 45 miles away in Willcox, AZ. Work is performed indoors and outdoors and may require standing, walking, or sitting for extended periods of time. A half-mile hike over rough terrain is required daily to reach the visitor center. Summer temperatures range from daytime highs of upper 90s to lows of 70s. Monsoon storms occur July to September with potential flash flooding. 

 

Additional Information: A minimum of 32 hours per week, four 8-hour days, is required. An RV pad with full hookups: water, electricity, and sewer is available for trailers and RVs 29 feet or smaller in length. Limited shared housing may be available. Dates may be negotiable. Training and uniform shirts are provided.
