Virtual Learning Session for High School Teachers

"Never Forget": Teaching September 11 to Future Generations

If you are a high school teacher who would like to teach September 11 in the classroom but don't know how to start, then this virtual learning session is for you! Join Flight 93 National Memorial and the Friends of Flight 93 for a panel of educators that lead the way in teaching September 11 in the classroom. This panel focuses on the challenges of teaching September 11 and how these teachers have not only overcome the challenges, but also developed strong programs in their schools. Free Act 48 credits are available to Pennsylvania certified teachers (1.5 hours).

"A Monumental Task": The Military and Civilian Air Response on September 11, 2001

On September 11, 2001, military and civilian aviation officials faced an unthinkable reality: hijacked airliners used as weapons against the United States. 20 years later, panelists from NORAD and the FAA will recount their roles in defending American airspace.

"A Field of Honor Forever": Creating the Flight 93 National Memorial

The creation of the Flight 93 National Memorial required years of hard work, passion, and dedication. Key members of the planning team will recall the long journey to commemorating the passengers and crew of Flight 93.

Special Program: Luminaria

On the evening of September 10, the Friends of Flight 93 will host the Luminaria Ceremony at Flight 93's Memorial Plaza. 40 candle lanterns will be lit and carried by family members, distinguished guests, and Friends of Flight 93 members and placed below the names of each of the passengers and crew members of Flight 93, dramatically illuminating the Wall of Names. This is a respectful tribute and peaceful time to reflect and remember those who were lost on September 11, 2001.

The general public is welcomed and encouraged to attend.

The Johnstown Symphony Orchestra will participate as the musical accompaniment for the Luminaria Ceremony. The orchestra's strings will play the music of Gustav Mahler, Samuel Barber, and George Walker.

September 11 Observance

With public health in mind, the 90-minute observance will be limited to family members and invited guests and livestreamed on the park’s Facebook page at 9:30 am. Click here for 20th Anniversary Observance Program.

Park grounds will reopen to the public following the conclusion of the ceremony.

The annual September 11 observance will begin at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, September 11, on the Memorial Plaza. At 10:03 a.m. – the moment Flight 93 crashed – the names of the passengers and crew members will be read, the Bells of Remembrance will be rung in their memory, and a wreath will be placed at the Wall of Names. At the conclusion of the wreath laying, the ceremonial gate to the crash site will be opened and family members will walk out to the crash site.

Tribute Memorial Concert

On September 11, the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra will perform Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 “From the New World,” in a community concert as part of the memorial observance near the Wall of Names.

The concert is free and open to the public.

The crash of Flight 93 forever linked the emergency personnel of Somerset County to their colleagues in New York and Washington, DC. Local first responders will share their memories of arriving at the crash site and how it changed their lives.
