Patchogue, NY – Fire Island National Seashore has donated 1,950 pounds of venison to Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Food Bank, located in Hauppauge, New York.

“Fire Island National Seashore is committed to protect and restore natural habitats and historic landscapes at Fire Island National Seashore, as outlined in the park’s integrated deer management strategy,” said Superintendent Alexcy Romero. “This year’s donation demonstrates our commitment to continued support for our local community as well.”

“This donation is making a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve,” said Darlene Selario, retail donation coordinator at Long Island Cares. “It shows that the National Park Service truly cares about helping feed the food insecure.”

The donation follows the safe and successful removal of 98 deer from Fire Island National Seashore properties. This year, 45 deer were removed from National Park Service lands at the William Floyd Estate and 53 deer from Fire Island itself. The deer management operation has concluded for the 2024 season.
